YOUTH SERVICES - Early Career Training

Overview of Programs & Services

The Chipola Regional Workforce One-Stop Centers initiate programs that provide hands on instruction for youth to help them gain knowledge in work related skills, time management, resource management, and leadership development while at the same time encouraging them to recognize their value to the community where they live. Within Region 3, youth can participate in projects that are in partnership with their local city, county or other community based organizations. Youth are excited to participate in the projects from start to finish and admire the fact that family, friends and neighbors can see their progress reflected throughout the community.

Promotion of After School Activities

Work experience is made available to eligible youth. Workshops such as Employability Skills, Checking Accounts/Check Writing, Citizenship, Etiquette, and others are available to youth after school and on some Saturdays. Mentoring activities are available such as assisting with homework and preparing for the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT). Youth will be paid either a bonus for their participation or an established hourly stipend. In addition, social interaction activities such as dining out, going to the movies, bowling, and the like, may be made available to youth.

Area County School Board Initiatives

Year-round youth services are provided to youth ages 14 - 18 through Mini-One-Stop Centers set up in area High Schools. The main goal is to provide tutoring to reinforce basic skills and assist in career exploration. At these centers, students are offered career exploration, workforce preparation, personal development, and educational programs. Participants are assisted on study skills, employability skills, comprehensive guidance, goal setting, and unpaid work experience including job shadowing, internships, and volunteer work.

Computer Lending Programs

Holmes County programs also offer laptop computers that are available to students to check out on a weekly basis. The laptops can be used for homework assignments and contain remedial basic skills programs. Economically disadvantaged students do not have access to computers at home. This allows these students to become more computer literate, a necessity in today’s world, and enhances students’ employment skills.

Post-Secondary - Vocational Training

One-Stop Centers in the region serve economically disadvantaged youth who are eligible and interested in occupational skills training. Youth are assessed to determine skill levels and interests. Area community colleges and technical centers offer many programs that are high wage/high demand occupations. These programs range from seven weeks to two years in duration.

Teen Pregnancy Prevention

The Panhandle Abstinence Education Project is a Teen Pregnancy Prevention and Abstinence until Marriage project under the direction of the Florida Department of Health. The service area includes Holmes, Washington, Jackson, Calhoun and Liberty counties.

The Chipola Regional Workforce Development Board coordinates with the Abstinence Project to provide the Teen Outreach Program, Teen Leader Program, promotion of abstinence activities, and has contributed to a lending library of materials and props for the Region.  The Teen Pregnancy Prevention Program is available for middle and high school students.
